How to Do a Subscription Audit in 15 Minutes

A 15-minute subscription audit

Subscriptions are designed to be easy to forget. A quick audit every few months is one of the fastest ways to free up money without changing anything else about how you live.

1. Search your email (5 minutes)

Search for words like “receipt”, “renewal”, “your plan”, “subscription” and “trial”. Note each service and what it costs.

2. Check your phone (3 minutes)

On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android: Play Store → your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.

3. Scan one statement (5 minutes)

Look through last month's card and bank statements for small repeating charges. These are the ones that hide best.

4. Decide: keep, pause or cancel (2 minutes)

  • Keep what you used in the last month and would pay for again today.
  • Pause or downgrade what you use occasionally.
  • Cancel anything you forgot you had.

Make it stick

Put the kept subscriptions in one list with their renewal dates, and set a calendar reminder a few days before annual renewals. Then point the money you saved at a goal so it doesn't quietly disappear.

The Home Binder includes a printable subscriptions tracker. Take a look.
