What to Put in a Home Management Binder (A Simple Checklist)

The Home Binder cover, weekly cleaning schedule and meal planner pages

A home management binder is simply one place for the information and routines your household runs on: who to call when the furnace stops, what's for dinner this week, when the filters were last changed. It doesn't need to be fancy. It needs to be easy to find and easy to update.

Section 1: Household at a glance

  • Emergency contacts and a neighbor or family member to call
  • Service contacts: plumber, electrician, HVAC, landlord or HOA, utilities
  • Where the water shut-off, breaker panel and spare keys are
  • Wi-Fi details for guests and sitters (consider leaving passwords out of a binder that sits on the counter)

Section 2: Calendar and planning

  • A year-at-a-glance page for birthdays, renewals and school breaks
  • Monthly planners (undated pages mean you can start any month)
  • A weekly planner for appointments and activities

Section 3: Cleaning and routines

  • A short daily reset routine
  • A weekly cleaning schedule, split by day if that helps
  • A monthly and seasonal deep-clean list
  • A room-by-room reset checklist for busy weeks

Section 4: Meals and groceries

  • A weekly meal planner
  • A grocery list grouped by store section
  • A pantry and freezer inventory, so you don't buy what you already have
  • A recipe index of family favorites

Section 5: Home maintenance

  • A maintenance calendar: filters, smoke detector batteries, gutters, seasonal checks
  • A repair log with dates, who did the work and what it cost

Section 6: Money

  • A monthly bill tracker with due dates
  • A subscriptions tracker with renewal dates
  • Important dates such as insurance renewals and registration deadlines

Keep account numbers and passwords out of the binder. A list of which bills exist and when they're due is enough.

How to keep it useful

  • Keep it where you plan. A kitchen shelf or counter works better than a closet.
  • Reprint the weekly pages rather than squeezing notes into old ones.
  • Do a five-minute update at the start of each month: next month's dates, any repairs, new subscriptions.
  • Start small. Two or three sections you'll actually use beat a perfect binder that gathers dust.

Want the pages ready to print?

The Home Binder ($14) has 34 undated pages organized into these same areas: household at a glance and contacts, a year at a glance with monthly and weekly planners, cleaning routines, meal planning with a grocery list and pantry inventory, a home maintenance calendar and repair log, and bill and subscription trackers. It's a PDF you can print at home (US Letter; prints on A4 with "fit to page") or use in GoodNotes or Notability. For a quick weekly routine to pair with it, see our 30-minute weekly home reset.
